The Bologna University Library is the preservation of book publishing institution of the University of Bologna.

It boasts a wealth of 726,523 printed volumes, 1,021 incunabula, 14,953 sixteenth, 7,698 manuscripts and 310,547 pamphlets [1] - but also has a large number of prints, drawings, photographs, and microfilm - for a total of 1,348,688 units of material, ranking first among the public libraries of the city of Bologna for many materials.

The library, located in Via Zamboni 35 next to Palazzo Poggi seat of the Rector of the Alma Mater, has about two hundred places for consultation, to which all citizens can access through registration.

The library was born later donations, the first was that of Luigi Ferdinando Marsili Institute of Science in 1712. In 1742 it added the donation of Ulisse Aldrovandi. Finally another big donation (25,000 volumes) was made by Pope Benedict XIV in 1755. It was Benedict XIV commissioned the construction of the House Magna monumental (35 x 11 meters), set against the sixteenth-century Palazzo Poggi. In 1756 the library was opened to the public.

So far, the library has been enlarged and resets, it is also equipped with a mechanized and computerized system to clutter and access to over half a million volumes.
